Time to show United fans, what all the fuss was about

Football FanCast guest columnist Steve Ranson feels that next season Berbatov will finally show United fans what a true class act he really is.

It is fair to say that there are still some sections of Old Trafford yet to be convinced by the abilities of Dimitar Berbatov. Whether it is languid style that doesn't sit with supporters, who have been brought up on a diet of Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez and their endless running, I don't know, but on closer inspection of the stats, it appears that the Bulgarian more than made a telling contribution.

Dimitar's style is like marmite to some people, but if you give him the ball and make him the focal point of attack there is no question that he is one of the most lethal marksmen in the game who is more than capable of getting 20+ goals and an equal amount of assists. You simply have to play to his strengths; otherwise he can go in and out of games and not be deemed effective.

The thing with United is for so long they have been reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo to be the catalyst of their attack that everything was played through him, which was hardly conducive to Berbatov's game, which is with him playing with his back to goal. The Bulgarian, like Ibrahimovic at Inter, need to be the focal point of the teams attack otherwise they look like passengers out there and not being utilised to the best of their abilities. I'm not suggesting that Fergie overlooked that, but I feel it was a big reason why Berbatov was left out of the run in and big games towards the end of the season, as Sir Alex decided to put all his eggs on Ronaldo delivering, oppose to utilising him. With Cristiano now gone, Fergie will now look to get the best out of his No.9 and alongside Rooney I believe it promises to be one hell of an attack.

With Ronaldo moved on to Madrid and Tevez moving to Eastlands, I really believe that United will be better off with Rooney and Berbatov leading the line and you'll see the goals shared around as a result, as United won't be as predictable going forward as they showed at times last season. I really believe that the aforementioned duo will be the deadliest in the League and Dimitar will be able to unlock the goals from Wayne Rooney and the pair of them should easily be hitting 20+ league goals apiece. Suddenly his doubters can understand what all the fuss was about and why Sir Alex was desperate to secure his services last summer. The real Dimitar Berbatov will finally stand up and that will be a tremendous sight for United fans to see.
