Football FanCast guest columnist Dean Powell feels that Tottenham must rue the two that got away.
Unlike most I don’t have a particular dislike for Tottenham and would much rather see them challenging us than struggling and although last weekend saw a rather convincing win, you would be a fool to right off their credentials on the back of one poor showing, especially when you see the giant strides that have been made. Harry is building a decent team there and one that is capable of challenging the top four in time, although I bet he certainly rues a couple of signings that got away.
They say that one person’s misfortune can sometimes prove another person’s gain and two of our best players have been taken from under Tottenham’s grasp. Quite why the opportunity was passed up to sign a certain diminutive Russian or the Verminator is anybody’s guess and represents a huge mistake, firstly by the club board in failing to pay Zenit their fee and in the case of Thomas, a huge error by Redknapp. Harry came out suggested the reason he passed up on the Belgium ace was because he had plenty of cover on the left hand side and in central defence; a strange viewpoint when you consider he later paid out on Sébastien Bassong.
Arshavin and Vermaelen have not only been decent signings, but proved our only ones in the past 12months and in my opinion have made a massive difference. I am sure Tottenham fans are equally as baffled and disappointed at knowing their club passed up the opportunity to have the duo at the Lane and why I know it is easy to say in hindsight, as both have performed to a sublime level, they are two big gambles that Spurs have failed to take and ones that we have benefitted from greatly as a result. I personally think that it is the duo that are the missing pieces and has made all the difference and sees us as genuine contenders for the title this season; how ironic it is then that Tottenham may have inadvertently played a significant part in it.
