Tottenham’s shrewd transfer move could signal an exciting summer

Most Tottenham fans were taken by surprise when it was announced Brad Friedel was leaving Aston Villa to join Tottenham at the end of last week. When I heard the news, I immediately thought it was a fantastic piece of business for Tottenham . There can be no substitute for experience and Brad Friedel has a world of that.

His age may concern some Tottenham fans; but it should not be an issue. He has performed at the top of his game for a number of seasons now and there is no suggestion that just because he has reached 40 he will suddenly become a poor goalkeeper. What is clear is Brad Friedel is still an athlete and could prove to be one of the most important signings Tottenham have made in many years.

There are many Tottenham fans that have wanted to see the back of Heurelho Gomes for a while now. There are other Tottenham fans who have stood by the goalkeeper; sighting some of the exceptional saves he has made over the past two seasons as evidence of his true quality. Whatever camp you sit in, there is no doubt an experienced goalkeeper will help Gomes. There is no reason why the signing of Brad Friedel should signal the end for Heurelho Gomes .

The wealth of knowledge and experience that Friedel has should be tapped into. Managers and coaches can drill the basics into goalkeepers but what Friedel can bring to both Gomes and the Tottenham defence could be priceless. The signing will no doubt solidify a Tottenham defence that leaked far too many sloppy goals last season. There will be concerns over Friedel’s age and how many games he can offer Tottenham. Time will tell if it will be an issue but if you look at the way Friedel has performed over the past season, it is not likely that his high standards will dramatically drop.

It is without doubt a very shrewd signing for Tottenham and one that might set the tone for the transfer window as a whole. Tottenham can’t compete with the money that Chelsea and Manchester City can afford to spend on players but if Harry Redknapp can bide his time and make sensible signings that will both improve and help the squad as a whole. A few more signings like this and there is no reason why Tottenham fans shouldn’t be excited for next seasons push for honours.

What do you think? Is Brad Friedel capable of performing at the highest level or will he show his age?
