Unnecessary ‘deals’ that simply add no value to Spurs

Football FanCast guest columnist Ian Bristow wonders if talk of Spurs needing to strengthen in January is really justified.

One lesson Spurs have learnt this summers' transfer window is that ‘less is more' and how a little bit of stability and continuity at the football club can go a long way indeed in helping the team progress.

I have to confess that I was rather caught up by what has gone on before and was slightly disappointed that we didn't go out and buy X, Y and Z, as I really felt the quality wasn't there. I didn't think we had done enough this summer to really see a vast improvement in the team, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the club's change in tact and you start to realise the benefits of holding a steady ship and let existing players find their feet.

The start of the season has been superb and given the amount of injuries we have been able to maintain our position, largely in part to our strength in depth. The media and pundits have been championing the size of our squad and against the top sides it certainly does fair favourably. One gaze over the squad in general and we certainly have every position covered at least once; however we are blessed with the likes of Corluka, Kranjcar and Huddlestone who can step in and play a variety of roles need be. Sometimes you need a neutral to come in to make you realise as to how good you actually have got it and you have to agree that we do possess arguably our strongest squad in years.

Despite all this, I am amazed that other Spurs fans that I talk to still believe that there is further room for improvement in January. Talk of binging in a centre half, a new partner for Palacios and possibly another striker seems to have dominated message boards over the past few weeks, especially with regards to finding a new partner for Wilson and I'm left scratching my head as to that is really the case. There has been talk of us striking deals for Sandro, Scott Brown and Patrick Viera once again, but are these the kind of signings we really need? In centre midfield we have the likes of Huddlestone, Kranjcar, O'Hara and JJ, therefore should we really be in the market for another one in January? In central defence we have Dawson, King, Bassong, Woodgate, Corluka all vying for two places and upfront, there isn't (with the possible exception of Man City) a better quartet of strikers to choose from. We are overloaded and Harry really has the most welcome of headaches.

So I ask the question to Spurs fans as to whether there is such a need for a January splurge in the transfer market after all – isn't our squad is in fact strong enough to cope with the challenge of breaking into the top four?
