FanCast guest columnist Craig Saunders wonders if Arsene
should forgive and forget and bring Nicolas Anelka to the Emirates.
It is not often I find myself agreeing with Charlie
Nicholas, but when he suggested, the other week on Sky, that le Sulk should be
brought back to the Emirates this summer I found myself in total agreement.
I know Anelka still grates with some Arsenal fans
and the manner of his departure all those years back does leave a sour taste,
but isn’t he exactly the type of striker we are missing at the Emirates at
present – isn’t it worth forgiving and forgetting for the sake of the team?
They say it is a cardinal sin to re-sign players as
they are never able to replicate former glories, however with Anelka it is
different and it is very much a case of unfinished business at Arsenal. I’m
sure there isn’t a day that goes past where he doesn’t regret jumping ship for
the Bernabeu knowing the glory he missed out on at Highbury, especially when
you consider how his career nosedived ever since with a series of move to
mediocre clubs, which has done little but strengthen his, and no doubt his
brothers, coffers due to all those signing on fees.
His time at Chelsea has seen him return to his best
and he finished this season as PL top scorer. We saw for ourselves first hand
of his capabilities with a moment of brilliance the other week and that display
of pace and power upfront is something we seriously lack. In many ways (although I’m no fan of his) I can
understand why Arsene chooses to play Bendtner on occasions upfront as he does
add something different by bringing a directness to our attack and has the
strength to hold up the ball. Unfortunately the Dane isn’t clinical enough and
that is a trait that you certainly couldn’t point at Anelka who vary rarely
fails not to work the keeper. Another attribute that appeals about Anelka is
that he isn’t lazy and unlike Adebayor and on occasions RVP is prepared to put
a shift in.
I just wonder what Arsene’s view is on Nicolas now
and whether he would be prepared to give him another shot. Personally if
Chelsea is keen on Adebayor then perhaps he could ask for Anelka in a possible
exchange deal. I’m not sure what Anelka’s worth is at this moment but Chelsea
surely won’t want much more than the £15m they paid Bolton to capture his
services, therefore we should make a fair few million on top as well. It would
be the perfect move all round really and win, win, for all parties. The
prospect of Anelka leading the line with an Arshavin or RVP in behind him would
certainly give our strike force a different edge and provide us with that
killer instinct we have been missing.
So would Arsenal fans be prepared to welcome back
Anelka to Arsenal, or has too much water gone under bridge?
