Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League, the final few weeks of last season were not all bad for Baggies’ fans. An unbeaten month in April saw boss Darren Moore awarded the manager of the month trophy and the Jamaican will be looking to rebuild his squad now he has the job on a permanent basis.
One area he will surely look to strengthen is central midfield. Experienced players James Morrison and Claudio Yacob are both out-of-contract this summer and Moore will need to bring in fresh faces to cope with the demands of the Championship.
Defensive midfielder Yacob made 19 appearances last season, whereas the more versatile Morrison missed most of the season with an Achilles injury. It has yet to be confirmed whether both players will leave the club but even if they stay in the West Midlands, new recruits will be necessary.
One player that Moore should take a look at signing is Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback. The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship and could form a perfect midfield partnership with the more powerful Jake Livermore.
Seemingly out-of-favour with Rafa Benitez, Newcastle would be motivated sellers as Mike Ashley will only sanction new signings if players leave St James’s. The Englishman is valued at just £3.15m by Transfermarkt.
Colback began his career with Sunderland, making 114 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats before making the controversial move across the city to Newcastle. He has since played over a century of games for the Magpies and would be the perfect signing for a newly relegated side.
