FanCast guest columnist George
Bevan wonders what
Sunderland's obsession is with Spurs' outcasts.
Whether it is the chairman's links to North London,
or a penchant for N17, Sunderland just cannot seem to get enough of Tottenham
Hotspur and seem determined to get their hands on as many lilywhites as
possible in order to bolster their squad. It is becoming a familiar tale and to
the neutral it could we be perceived that we are something of a feeder club.
Obviously when I say feeder club I don't mean in the
conventional sense like West Ham is to Spurs, but whenever we have a few scraps
lying around, or a few bits of meat in the shop window, they are sniffing
around us and determined to take them off our hands. You couldn't exactly call
the mackems scouting policy highly ambitious and perhaps Mr Levy should sort
out some season tickets for them.
It is getting quite silly and I wonder if one day
Sunderland will be able to fill a whole side full of ex-Spurs players. They are
half way there and you could have Bent and Campbell upfront, Tainio, Reid and
Malbranque in midfield and of course Fulop in goal. It appears that Bruce is
determined not to stop there and he is keen to add some new recruits.
Over the summer he made enquiries for Huddlestone,
Dawson and in particular Alan Hutton, who he reportedly made a bid for on
deadline day. According to the Mirror
this morning he has identified the Scottish full back as one of his main priorities
when the transfer windows open to bolster Sunderland's leaky defence. Whether
Hutton wants to move to Wearside remains to be seen, but he certainly wouldn't
be short of company if he did make the move.
