Who is Hamšík…this apparent object of Chelsea’s affections?

marek-hamsikRecently linked with moves to Chelsea and Juventus, Napoli’s Marek Hamšík is a player that is clearly in demand.

At 22 years of age, the time may be right for Hamšík to consider moving to a bigger club; he is recognised as one of the brightest young stars in the Italian league and has performed well since his €5.5 million move to Naples from Serie B’s Brescia in 2007. An all-action central midfielder with an eye for goal, Hamsik is a key member of the Napoli squad and has quickly become a fans’ favourite. Chelsea and Juventus have been credited with the strongest interest in the young Slovak and Ancelotti will know all about 2008’s Serie A Young Footballer of the Year from his time managing in the Italian league.

With an impressive 25 goals in 80 league appearances for Napoli, Chelsea may view him as the long-term replacement for Frank Lampard. Hamsik has started this season in scintillating form with 7 goals in 12 league games including a brace which inspired a marvellous comeback against Juventus when his side went from 2-0 down to emerging as 3-2 winners at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino. Let’s have a look at ten of his best goals, accompanied by some unrelated hip-hop.

Marek Hamsik – Top Ten Goals

As you can see, he shows good composure in front of goal and has the ability to carry the ball from deep and makes the transition from defence to attack with ease. He is comfortable heading the ball and his ability to arrive in the box at the right time is reminiscent of Frank Lampard or a young Paul Scholes. He is known to have quite a cheeky personality and could prove to be a lot of fun if he signs for a Premier League side.

Standing 6ft tall, Hamšík is comfortable playing in the centre of midfield or on the left side; he has good technique and is a genuine goalscoring threat. Under contract at Napoli until the summer of 2012, his value is set to soar if the major European sides decide to make a move for him in January. He would be eligible to play in the Champions League knockout round and this could entice either Chelsea or Manchester United to make a bid, though the mooted price of £14 million could prove a stumbling block.

Hamšík is already an important player for his national team, amassing a total of 27 caps and scoring 7 goals. Slovakia will be at the World Cup in the summer and Hamšík, along with Liverpool’s Martin Škrtel carries the nation’s hopes on his shoulders. An impressive display in South Africa could guarantee a move to one Europe’s leading clubs in the summer transfer window. An exciting player, he would be a wonderful addition to the Premier League.
