Arsene Wenger is looking to rectify his inability to bring in a replacement centre-back for Thomas Vermaelen after sanctioning the Belgium international’s move to La Liga giants Barcelona.
What’s the story?

The 29-year-old has revealed that the Gunners have been in contact with him over possibly sounding out a deal, he said:
“I have been contacted personally
“Arsenal is interested but for now there is still no contact with Saint-Etienne.”
Is he worth it?
Depends on how you view the January transfer window? If you view it like Arsene Wenger as an inconvenience, not a time to get good value for money then, yeah, signing an experienced centre-back with proven European experience for under £10million, means he is certainly worth it. However, if you view it as an Arsenal fan, knowing their club has millions to spend and having been linked previously with bigger fish – such as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels – then, nope, this seems an underwhelming signing.
Although, maybe after giving his ‘best bits’ a cheeky watch, the Gooners out there may well change their minds:
Who would Perrin replace?
Depends what position Le Professeur has earmarked for Perrin’s potential arrival. If it is as a centre-back, then Per Mertesacker will no doubt fear for his place having faced heavy criticism this season. However, if it is the 29-year-old’s ability to play defensive-midfield that is taking Wenger’s fancy, Mathieu Flamini – assuming Mikel Arteta remains fit – will struggle to make the matchday 18.
