Who represents the best move for talented Argentine?

One of La Liga’s star strikers looks set to move on as Argentinean Sergio Aguero has publicly announced his desire to leave Atletico Madrid this Summer. The player regularly linked with the likes of Chelsea last summer looked set to stay in the Spanish capital having agreed a contract extension with the club in January. But after a disappointing end to the season for Atletico and with the close-season fast approaching it appears Aguero could be on the move. But where would represent the best move for the 22-year old?

Aguero’s name was constantly linked with Chelsea last summer his reported £40 million buy-out clause would not be a problem for the wealth of Roman Abramovich. With Didier Drogba potentially on his way out of Stamford Bridge and Nicolas Anelka 33 next season, Chelsea will have to plan for the future at some point. Likewise, Aguero would have the chance to be reunited with his old strike partner at Atletico, Fernando Torres. But, Torres has struggled since his move and Aguero would surely fear similar. What’s more, the club have disappointed this season and need to appoint a new manager before they think about signings.

Another club with vast wealth is Manchester City. Roberto Mancini’s side need to improve their squad as they prepare for Champions League football next year. With fans still unsure on both Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez still to decide if he wants to remain at Eastlands, he would be a welcome addition. But, Balotelli and Dzeko are still finding their feet in the Premier League and are likely to be given more time to adjust. And, rather than pursue and incorporate one talented Argentinean, a much more important challenge will surely be in convincing Tevez to remain at City.

Liverpool have been tentatively linked with the player as they continue their rebuilding under Kenny Dalglish. Despite having already spent over £50 million on new signings in January, this was mostly the proceeds of the sale of Torres and the club still have funds available from new owners Fenway Sports Group. But the club would be unable to offer the opportunity of Champions League football whilst there are other areas of the team that need investment before another striker. Likewise, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll look like having a great future ahead of them and the addition of another star player would surely disrupt this.

The bookies’ favourites at the moment are Real Madrid and a move across the city would prove simple for Aguero. Real could afford his transfer fee whilst he would be able to remain in a League he understands and would be guaranteed Champions League football. But where exactly would he fit into the Real team? Whilst Real President Florentino Perez tends to buy now and worry later, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a staggering 40 league goals this season. What’s more, they have Gonzalo Higuain now back from injury whilst Karim Benzema finished the season in fine form and silenced some of his critics. But, Real have learnt before the cost of trying to fit too many stars into one team and Jose Mourinho for one probably won’t stand for it.
