With two weeks of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League done and dusted, the groups are starting to take shape. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Marseille are the only three teams with their 100% record still intact, while neither of the Premier League’s high flyers: Manchester United and City, have won a game yet. However, there’s a long way to go and it will be in the knockout stages next year that the competition really hots up and that’s when the legendary moments will be played out.

As far as British teams in the Champions League are concerned, there have been a trio of legendary moments that spring to mind. These feature Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea, and all took place in the final of the competition, and the latter two will be looking to book their tickets to Munich for next year to create another legendary moment.

First up is the last final of the 20th century, played out between Man United and Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp in Barcelona. Bayern looked to be heading to victory, but in injury time Teddy Sheringham netted an equaliser and just two minutes later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit a dramatic winner in front of 90,000 stunned fans.

In 2005, Liverpool completed arguably the greatest ever Champions League comeback. In Istanbul AC Milan went into the break 3-0 up and looking comfortable, but in the second half goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso brought the scores level. Then in the penalty shootout Jerzy Dudek saved Shevchenko’s penalty to win the cup for the Reds.

2008 saw another penalty shootout in the final, but this time two English teams were involved: Man United and Chelsea. On a rainy night in Moscow, John Terry had the chance to win it for Chelsea from the spot, but hit the post. Nicolas Anelka couldn’t find the back of the net either and the Red Devils lifted the trophy for the second time in ten years.
