Football FanCast guest columnist Jeff Baxter feels Wenger would be wise to bring in another target man to the Emirates.
Would anyone be overly surprised if Arsene Wenger refrains from bringing in a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor and just sticks with what he has got? Let's be honest we do possess a wealth of attacking quality with Van Persie, Eduardo, Arshavin, Vela and Walcott; however it does only leave us with Nicklas Bendtner as the lone target man within our squad. Wenger may not have any reservations about that prospect, but I personally would have doubts and would urge him to spend.
Bendtner is very much a footballing enigma at Arsenal where one minute he looks world class, the next average at best, and you never know which Nicklas will turn up every given week. I have debated the subject of our great Dane with many people and the general consensus is that he simply needs a run of games in the side in order to find his feet and more importantly his confidence in front goal. A lot of us seem to forget that he is still a youngster at 21-yrs-old and perhaps I have been too quick and overzealous in my condemnation of him at times, but would Wenger be taking a tremendous risk in putting all his eggs in one basket here. Is Bendtner really ready for a regular starting berth and will Adebayor's departure inadvertently be the making of him?
To be honest Wenger has always thought highly of him and the very fact he remains at the club is testament to that. Arsene is normally quite ruthless with his youngsters and if they haven't made a notable impression by the age of 20 then they are generally shipped out to some championship or lesser side. Wenger clearly wants to bide his time with Bendtner and see if he can become that top quality striker than over the years many felt he would be. I personally don't dispute that he could be in time, but shouldn't Arsene look to bring in an insurance policy just in case?
