Any Manchester United fans watching Leicester vs. Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last night were sure to have been wowed by Jose Gimenez. The Uruguayan defender was deployed in a deep-lying midfield role as Diego Simeone set up his side to get the result they needed at the King Power Stadium after winning the first leg at the Vicente Calderon, and he really contributed.

Linked with Manchester United late last year, Gimenez, 22, has been causing a stir in La Liga for a while now, where his full-blooded playing style and sheer potential have earned him regular playing time and the interest of some big clubs. Jose Mourinho was supposedly looking for a commanding centre-back over the summer and, although the South American was operating just in front of the backline, his stats from the Leicester game hint that he could fit the bill…

As the numbers show, Gimenez was as solid as a rock, making the greatest numbers of clearances (16), winning the most Aerial duels (12), putting in the highest number of interceptions (seven) and completing the most tackles (six) of any player on the pitch! He also managed 75 touches of the ball and even played a key pass as his side secured a 1-1 draw and booked yet another Champions League semi-final berth.

Perhaps Man United should revive their interest in Gimenez…
