Everton suffered an incredibly humbling defeat in the Europa League last night that has inevitably lead to questions over whether the Toffees invested in the right players during the summer transfer window and whether Ronald Koeman is taking the first team in the right direction.

Atalanta are currently 13th in Serie A after losing two of their first three fixtures and although away games on the continent are never easy, Everton really should have done better, especially in terms of performance, considering the quality at Koeman's disposal following a summer of unprecedented spending.

One summer signing, however, provided a much-needed silver lining from the 3-0 defeat. It's safe to say Everton fans weren't exactly overawed when the club's search for a centre-forward saw them snap up 19-year-old attacker Nikola Vlasic, who Transfermarkt value at just £3.6million, on Deadline Day.

However, the former Hadjuk Split man was amongst the better of a bad bunch for the Toffees on Thursday night, completing the most dribbles and laying on the second-most chances of any Everton player while contributing off the ball with two interceptions, two clearances and one tackle.

It was a promising debut from the Croatian international and gives Everton one positive to take from an otherwise extremely disappointing evening.
