Pogba’s stats vs. Anderlecht counter heavy criticism

No matter what he, Manchester United or fans may say, the £89m fee it took to snap up Paul Pogba from Juventus over the summer is an issue. The Frenchman became the most expensive player on the planet when he made his return to Old Trafford and with such a tag, his every movement and action is scrutinised.

And that was the case last night as Man United drew 1-1 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final vs. Anderlecht in Belgium. Although by no means a poor result, the fact the Red Devils led only to be pegged back was frustrating for them and with Pogba guilty of a few wasted opportunities, the criticism flew on social media across the 90 minutes.

Alas, the 24-year-old was actually one of the most influential players on the pitch…

As the number show, Pogba was heavily involved in Man United’s play, with his 147 touches and 127 passes both the highest counts of any player involved, illustrating just how integral he was to the ebb and flow of the game, while a pass success rate of 87% is not to be sniffed at. As well as the standout stats, the ex-Juve ace completed two dribbles and won two aerial duels, albeit only one key pass was slightly underwhelming given that Michael Carrick’s presence freed him up to get forward.

Maybe it’s time to judge the player without considering the transfer fee…
