According to reports in Bild, West Ham United are lining up a move for Hamburg centre-back Johan Djourou.

Irons boss Slaven Bilic is looking to strengthen his options at the heart of the defence with the likes of Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna missing chunks of the season because of injury, while January transfer window signing Jose Fonte has struggled to impress so far.

The Croatian manager is now said to have identified former Arsenal man Johan Djourou as a potential summer target, and the 30-year-old could be available on a free transfer with his contract with the Bundesliga outfit due to run out at the end of the campaign.

While he started the season as Hamburg’s skipper, he was stripped of the captaincy in November following a disagreement with his manager, and he has struggled for game time since – he has sat out the last three matches after appearing in an 8-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

However, in the 14 league appearances he has made for the club this term, he has been far from impressive.

While he has made an impressive 32 interceptions and 70 clearances, as well as winning 45 aerial duels, there are some stats that will worry Irons supporters too.

In those 14 games, Djourou has made four defensive errors and committed 24 fouls, picking up six yellow cards in the process.

It suggests that the 30-year-old has suffered from a lack of concentration, or possibly a lack of confidence with Hamburg currently lying in 16th in the Bundesliga standings.

Whatever it may be, he doesn’t seem like he would be a good signing for a shaky West Ham defence that has conceded 52 goals in 29 Premier League games this term.
