Steven Gerrard led out Aston Villa for the first time this afternoon to secure their first win in five games.
Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings delivered the goals to drive home a 2-0 win at Villa Park against an impressive Brighton team who have been excelling in the Premier League and are currently level on points with Manchester United.
Brighton dominated possession during the match, which is something we’re used to seeing with Graham Potter’s side, but the attacking prowess of Aston Villa ultimately decided a tight affair this afternoon.
Both Watkins and Mings were able to break down the Seagulls’ defence in the final ten minutes, with the former scoring in the 84th minute and the latter killing off the game on 89 minutes.
Despite the impressive attacking performance, one player who made an incredible impact on Aston Villa today was right-back Matt Targett, who gained the highest rating in both teams on SofaScore with an impressive 8.3/10.
The 26-year-old won seven tackles and nine duels today as he ensured that Brighton’s attack would get no change out of him, stifling the offensive threat of his opposite number Tariq Lamptey.
A number of Villa fans took to social media to praise Targett on his performance, with one of them tweeting: “I thought Matt Targett was my MOTM today. Best performance of the season. Contained Lamptey very well”
Matt Maher, Chief Sports Writer for the Express & Star, also took to Twitter to praise the defender, saying: “First clean sheet in six matches the biggest positive, result aside. Thought Matt Targett did pretty well against Lamptey. #avfc just much more solid as a unit.”
The Gerrard era is up and running with a win and a clean sheet, and Targett was arguably the hero of the day on the 41-year-old’s Premier League managerial debut.
