“The players aren’t nervous, the fans are.”
That’s the opinion of Pl>ymaker FC’s Tom Skinner who believes the tense atmosphere generated by the Liverpool faithful, both home and away, has become a major factor behind the Reds’ recent title race slip ups.
The fans can be excused for being a little on edge having waited 29 years for a league title but Skinner thinks belief amongst the supporters is critical to how Jurgen Klopp’s side play.
“We must turn doubters into believers” was the key message from the German on day one of his Liverpool tenure.
Skinner believes the players have the steel to grind out the right results in the hunt for a first league title since 1990 but the energy supplied by the fans, particularly at Anfield, is mirrored in the tempo of Liverpool’s play. Put simply, when the fans fall silent, the football falls flat.
