Watch: Jermaine Jenas on why nothing compares to the Tyne-Wear derby

These days, Jermaine Jenas can be found enjoying his football from the comfort of a TV studio. In 2002, however, he was making his debut for Newcastle in one of the fiercest derbies in the world.

“That derby is serious” claims Jenas, who had actually sat down to chat with Pl>ymaker FC’s Natalie Polycarpou about the North London derby. However, whilst discussing the animosity he experienced whilst playing for Spurs against Arsenal, the former-England man explained in no uncertain terms that the Tyne-Wear derby was a far more intense occasion.

Sadly, such spectacles are few and far between given Sunderland’s recent back-to-back relegations but tonight, the Checkatrade Trophy has thrown up a rare mouthwatering fixture as Newcastle and Sunderland U23s go head-to-head at the Stadium of Light.

Check out the video above to hear Jermaine Jenas recall the terrifying moment he was attacked by fans and explain why, when it comes to local derbies, nothing comes close to the Tyne-Wear.
