Pompey’s fall from grace might have been quite sudden and quite harsh but they can still boast with an impressive portfolio of big-money signings and departures as well. And it is also likely that their most expensive purchase will remain at the top of the mountain for quite some time, given the sheer size of the transfer.
Of course, we are talking about the purchase of Peter Crouch from Liverpool in 2008/09 for an incredible fee of £12.3m. Crouch’s arrival broke the previous record that was set in 2007/08 by Sulley Muntari who arrived for £9.4m from Udinese.
But the most interesting thing about their top transfers is that five out of the top six and seven out of top ten were done in that same 07/08 campaign. Apart from Muntari, Portsmouth also bought John Utaka (3rd), Jermain Defoe (4th), David Nugent (5th), Lassana Diarra (6th), Glen Johnson (9th) and Papa Bouba Diop (10th). Needless to say, it was quite a year for them!
On the other hand, 2008 and 2009 were big for sales. In 2009/10, they sold Glen Johnson to Liverpool for a club-record fee of £18.4, eclipsing the previous record holder, Diarra, who was sold to Real Madrid a year prior to that for £18m.
But apart from Diarra, they also sold Defoe (3rd) and Muntari (4th) during that same campaign. And we can see that many of their top transfers ended up becoming their top sales as well with most of them making the club some profit along the way.
When talking about famous transfers, we simply can’t fail to mention Crouch. Interestingly, the slender giant had two stints at the club, both similarly brief, but still managed to command quite a fee both with his arrival and the departure as well.
Apart from him, the likes of Muntari, Diarra and Johnson surely deserve a shout as well since all of them ruffled a couple of feathers with their transfers. But there are more.
Niko Kranjcar is definitely a name many Portsmouth fans are familiar with as the Croat has had a fruitful spell with the Pompey back in the day. And then there are the likes of Kevin Prince Boateng with his short but memorable stint at the club, Arjan de Zeeuw or Billy Gilbert, all of whom deserve to be on the list as well.
