Portsmouth: Cowley keen on Mason

An update has emerged on Portsmouth’s interest in Coventry left-back Brandon Mason…

What’s the talk?

According to The News, Portsmouth have identified Coventry left-back Brandon Mason as a target to solve their left-back situation. Danny Cowley is said to be a fan of the defender and would like to bring him in on a season-long loan deal.

Mason is due to spend some time with Portsmouth in training before a deal is finalised, with the player himself believed to be keen on a move.

Get it done

Cowley must ensure that he can get this one over the line and the signs are promising. The player wants it to happen and so do the club, which makes it seem like a transfer is only a matter of time from being completed. Portsmouth need to get it done and have him in the building ready to attack the 2021/22 League One season, as he could be an excellent addition to the squad.

The 23-year-old has experience in the Premier League, the Scottish Premiership, League One and the Championship under his belt despite his young age. This shows that he has adapted to several different leagues and that he has the ability required for managers to believe in him enough to pick him in each of those competitions.

During Coventry’s 2019/20 promotion campaign, Mason played 11 times in League One – starting 10 – and averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.88. He managed an eye-catching 4.9 tackles and interceptions per game, which is more than any Pompey player racked up per game in the third tier last term.

Former Watford boss Walter Mazzarri once hailed a wonderful performance by Mason in an FA Cup game, with the Hornets coach making it clear that he wanted to give the youngster a chance – with the teenager providing a dazzling display.

He told Sky Sports:

“Mason played wonderfully on his full debut with an assist for the goal.

“We had Mason with us when we did pre-season. With young players it’s very important for them to be with the first team and to make their debuts because this will make them grow as players.

Who was Harry Redknapp's first signing at Portsmouth?

“Sometimes it’s fundamental to see what we’ve got at home in our own house and make these young players grow so that we don’t always have to go abroad and sign players for a crazy amount of money.”

The £3.5k-per-week beast, therefore, could be a superb signing for Cowley’s team and bolster their options at left-back. At the age of 23, he also has room to improve and could be a player the ex-Huddersfield boss is able to coach and develop throughout the season.
