When Brendan Rodgers agreed to take over the Anfield reins from Kenny Dalglish in June he knew the task to bring Liverpool back from the brink would take him down a long and arduous road. Starting life with a valuable European away win in Belarus courtesy of a rasping Stewart Downing strike sounds as positive as it could get. But in all actuality it was a whopping, great eye opener serving to demonstrate the assignment Rodgers has on his plate. Whilst the goal from Downing was a major positive considering his diabolical debut campaign on Merseyside the performance was far from vintage and only shoddy finishing spared the Reds what should have been a night of punishment. Daniel Agger's absence didn't help matters but it only served to prove that Jamie Carragher has had his time in the sun and a new centre back is required to provide some serious competition with Sebastian Coates still suspect. Xabi Alonso still hasn't been replaced since his departure in 2009 and a midfield anchor to operate just in front of the back four is a necessary requirement if they are to achieve their goals this term.

This week on FFC should Rodgers cut his losses on Andy Carroll and could he be set to complete the signing of Wales playmaker Joe Allen?

Quote of the Week

"First and foremost it was a win, and that was always going to be the most important thing for us in our first competitive game. We are nowhere near where I want us to be at the moment in relation to fluency and charisma within the team. But what is important until we arrive at that time – and we have plenty of work still to do – is that we fight for the shirt, defend and play with desire and passion. We definitely did that."
