Arsenal and Manchester United dealt transfer blow

Real Madrid Luke Modric

Real Madrid have poured cold water over rumours suggesting Luka Modric was close to sealing a switch to either Arsenal or Manchester United, according to the Daily Express.

New Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted the Croatian midfielder will be staying at the Bernabeu, despite rumours emerging in the past few days of a return to the Premier League.

The ex-Chelsea boss said: “It is not true that Luka will leave.

“All the players are very happy to be here and are working well.

“We have not talked about offloading any of the players we have now, so it’s not true that Luka is on the way out. He is very important to us. He will play here this season.”

Manchester United have been linked with a move for the former Tottenham man after becoming frustrated in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, while Arsenal have emerged as surprise contenders for his signature in recent days, as Arsene Wenger hunts for his first big name signing of the summer.

It seemed Modric may be surplus to requirements following the arrival of Asier Illarramendi, but Ancelotti has insisted he is happy with his squad ahead of the new season.

“The squad is very good. We have quality, experience, character and youth. I can say I am very happy with the work we are doing,” he added.

“The goal is to use our squad to the fullest because it has a lot of quality. We need to play together and, above all, be a team that plays good football.”
