After helping Uruguay to considerable success at the World Cup back in 2018, Lucas Torreira arrived at Arsenal as the club's much-needed successor to Gilberto Silva. The Gunners had long been without a bona-fide holding midfielder to help protect the back four, but now, they had gotten one of the most effective players in that position in European football.

From the start of the 2016/2017 campaign whilst he was at Sampdoria, to the summer in which he left to head to the Emirates, no player had won more tackles (198), won more fouls (174) or made more interceptions (158). Torreira represented exactly the kind of player the north London side had been crying out for.

But this season, following Unai Emery's insistence on using him further forward to help press higher up the pitch, the little Uruguayan hasn't been his usual effective self. And against Brighton, in Freddie Ljungberg's second game in charge as interim head coach, the 23-year-old delivered a below-par display. As per Sofascore, he committed two fouls and lost possession seven times, with Gunners fans taking to Twitter after the game to vent their frustrations.

Some fans even felt Torreira doesn't favour comparably to players who no longer ply their trade at the Emirates, with one fan suggesting he is at the same level as Mohamed Elneny, and another claiming he is worse than Francis Coquelin.

As Arsenal's win-less run stretches to nine, it is unsurprising that the Gunners players are hitting a rough patch in their form. Torreira's struggles against Brighton were similar to most of his teammates, and it will be up to Ljungberg to get the best out of both the midfielder, and the rest of his teammates.

Meanwhile, Arsenal can't afford to take this major gamble by appointing this man.
