Arsenal & Liverpool in Ligue 1 hot-shot battle

Liverpool and Arsenal are set to go head-to-head for in-form Marseille forward Andre-Pierre Gignac, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The 29-year-old has been instrumental in l’OM’s impressive start to the Ligue 1 campaign – they currently occupy a top four berth – with 13 goals in 22 outings.

Although a key man at the Stade Velodrome, Gignac’s current contract expires at the end of the season, which has alerted a host of big clubs from across the continent.

It’s understood that both Arsenal and Liverpool are among the chasing pack, with the clubs impressed by his return.

There remains an outside chance of a January move, but swoops when he’s a free agent are thought to be more likely.

Arsenal signed Danny Welbeck over the summer, but Arsene Wenger may look to bolster his options at some stage after being forced to use Alexis Sanchez as a striker on occasion this term due to injuries.

Liverpool may also move for a striker at the end of the season, with Rickie Lambert the only orthodox forward the club have with more than one Premier League goal to his name.
