Arsenal & Liverpool transfer battle to intensify

Liverpool and Arsenal are set to go head-to-head in the January race for Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Greek international has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards this season following a succession of impressive displays both for his club and country – netting a combined 22 goals.

The 25-year-old has been on the radars of both Arsenal and Liverpool for some time, and it is believed that the two rivals will clash for his signature next month.

Despite his razor-sharp form, Olympiakos are set to demand around £7.5m for the 25-year-old, with financial worries in their nation gripping football.

Arsene Wenger’s side are believed to be the favourites for the hit-man, who would, likely, be used as a back-up to Olivier Giroud.

But Liverpool chief Brendan Rodgers is also keen, with Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes leaving him reliant on 17-goal forward Luis Suarez.

Olympiakos are thought to be ready to sell their star man, with their manager, Jose Miguel Michel, having confessed that it will be tough to keep him at the club:

“If he keeps on doing well, it will be hard to keep him.

“We’ve known for some time that there has been interest from many clubs, but that’s only logical considering how well he has been doing lately.”
