Arsenal and Manchester United look to have lost out in the race for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, with Real Madrid said to have agreed a first-refusal deal for his signature, according to reports from The Metro.
The Premier League duo have both been linked with January moves for the talented playmaker, who is widely thought of as one of the best players in his position in European football.
But, Real are set to nip in ahead of their English rivals, with rumours suggesting that a deal is all but secured for the 23-year-old if he wants to leave the Westfalenstadion next year.
Nuri Sahin could play a pivotal role in a potential deal, with the one time Liverpool loanee currently at Dortmund on a temporary basis with the La Liga side still his parent club.
It is understood that Jurgen Klopp is keen to keep the Turkish international, which could set up a cash plus player deal for Gundogan.
Such a move could plunge Xabi Alonso’s Real future into further doubt, with the German international operating in a similar role to the experienced midfield man.
Chelsea are thought to be keen on the 31-year-old, while Liverpool have been linked with a move to bring the player who helped them lift the Champions League trophy in 2005 back to Anfield.
Should Arsenal and Manchester United do all they can to secure Ilkay Gundogan?
