Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Star.
The 25-year-old is a long-term target for new Man United boss Louis Van Gaal as the Dutchman eagerly seeks defensive quality to fill the gaps left by the departed Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic last summer.
But Arsenal are also suffering with a light defence and boss Arsene Wenger is thought to be eyeing sensational move to pip Van Gaal to the World Cup winner’s signature.
Dortmund have made it clear that they are not willing to sell Hummels, particularly with fellow German international Marco Reus pushing for a move away in January.
But they could be forced in to sale if either United or Arsenal table a big enough offer in the winter.
