Arsenal told to up bid to £1.4m & Wenger keen on Brazilian playmaker – Best of AFC

Every year Arsene Wenger must shudder at the thought of the summer transfer window pulling up it’s shutters, unlocking it’s doors and opening business. Seriously, when was the last time the he emerged unscathed from silly season without waving goodbye to leading members of his squad and being left with barely enough time to scrape the surface of the deadline day barrel. Patrick Vieira kicked it off in 2005 and in the seven years since his departure 14 key players have flown the Emirates Stadium coop. And with each desertion the drama amplifies along with the debilitating effect it has on Wenger and his squad. Robin Van Persie has taken up the role of pantomime villain in 2012 leaving the Gunners boss at the mercy of the rich and pre-eminent. The Holland strikers bridges are all but burnt on North London and, with a bidding war for his services between Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini now looming, the time is now for Wenger to start drawing up a shortlist of replacements. The Frenchman has never advocated splashing out excessive amounts of money on players but he’ll need to break his philosophy on this occasion to ensure the inevitable void left by RVP is suitably filled.

This week on FFC what can Gunners fans expect from new signing Lukas Podolski next season and which Brazilian ace does Wenger have his eye on?

Quote of the Week

“Firstly, I must say that not being able to match the spending of the richest clubs does not mean that you can’t compete with them on the pitch. “When I first came to England, this question did not exist. Every club was run within its resources.” Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal can compete at the top without spending heavily in the transfer market
