According to various reports, Arsenal have entered the race to sign Lucas Torreira, with one local Italian outlet even claiming a deal has been agreed for the midfielder.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Arsenal have held talks with Torreira’s entourage, as Unai Emery is a big fan of the feisty Uruguayan.
Calciomercato added to the report, claiming that “Arsenal mean business” in the chase for Torreria, who is also wanted by Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.
Now, a report from Sampdoria’s very own sampnews24.com says the Gunners have actually agreed a deal with Sampdoria that they will meet the €25m (£22m) release clause “immediately”, providing they can convince the player to join.
If Arsenal want a feisty young midfielder who can do a little bit of everything, then they really won’t find any better than Sampdoria’s Torreira.
With Unai Emery likely to employ a high tempo pressing style in North London, he will need someone with bundles of energy to partner Granit Xhaka in midfield, and Torreira fits the bill.
The 22 year-old, who was extremely impressive in Uruguay’s World Cup warm-up against Uzbekistan this week, is fantastic at reading the game and breaking up play, before using his fantastic ball carrying ability and passing to launch attacks of his own.
While four goals and one assist in 36 Serie A appearances doesn’t exactly jump off the page at you, it’s his other stats that really tell the story.
Last season, the tough tackling midfield maestro averaged one key pass and one dribble per game, along with an impressive 87 per cent pass success rate. He also pitched in an incredible 2.8 tackles and two interceptions per game.
The 5 ft 5 midfielder is quite simply tenacious, and will cover loads of ground in midfield for the Gunners, allowing the likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to have freedom further up the pitch.
His technical ability means he can get involved in the attacks as well, while his tireless work rate would allow Xhaka to pull lots of strings, so it’s no surprise Emery wants him at the heart of his new look Arsenal side.
There have been plenty of rumours about the Gunners having a small transfer budget this summer, but either way £22m for a player on the brink of becoming world class is a no brainer.
