Arsenal ‘agree’ deal for long-term Man United target

Arsenal have agreed a fee with Sporting Lisbon for highly-rated midfielder William Carvalho, according to reports from Metro.

The Portugal international is thought of as one of European football’s top enforcers, and has been linked with Manchester United on and off since way back in 2013.

Arsenal, however, are now in pole position with a sum of around £21.5m having been ‘agreed’ between the Gunners and Sporting after the Lisbon side lowered their demands.

Carvalho himself is thought to be keen on the switch, while the London outfit may be in need of midfield reinforcements with captain Mikel Arteta’s contract due to expire in a few months’ time.

The 23-year-old is seen as potentially wise addition for Arsenal, who have lacked a physically imposing central player since the days of Patrick Vieira.

Carvalho has 12 international caps to his name and represented his country at last summer’s World Cup.
