Arsenal are interested in defender, says Celtic hero

Arsenal are keeping an eye on Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk ahead of the January transfer window, according to ex-Hoops striker Chris Sutton.

The Dutchman is regarded as one of Scottish football’s top talents and has been a big hit at Celtic Park since his switch from Groningen last year.

With Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rumoured to be tracking a number of new centre-backs ahead of the coming transfer window, Van Dijk has emerged as a target for the Gunners, with talk of an £8m move having been doing the rounds.

The Frenchman is said to be ready to invest in his backline, with a series of early season injuries having forced him into fielding Nacho Monreal – a left-back – at the heart of his rearguard.

And Sutton – who made over 130 appearances for the Glasgow giants – told GiveMeSport that the Londoners are interested in Van Dijk:

“He is in the national squad now and big things are hoped from him. There seems to be a fair bit of interest in him, from Arsenal nonetheless.”

Van Dijk is et to make his Holland debut and was considered by many to have been unfortunate to miss out on a spot in Louis van Gaal’s Oranje squad for the World Cup earlier this year.
