Having been sent off in the clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw his Arsenal teammates score five times in the three games that he missed - including coming back twice to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw against Chelsea after going down to ten-men.

But naturally, as the club's top goal-scorer, the Gabon international made an immediate return to the starting line-up for the clash against Burnley on Sunday afternoon - Mikel Arteta choosing to drop Nicolas Pepe to the bench to accommodate the presence of the forward.

Sadly for the Gunners, and Aubameyang himself, he endured a wretched display, that culminated with him missing a gilt-edged chance in the dying moments of the game when he steered his header wide from an Alexandre Lacazette cross.

Playing out on the left-hand side as he has done in recent weeks, Aubameyang very sparingly made those darting runs in between the full-back and the centre-back - a real surprise considering the two times he did do that (in the first-half especially), he found himself in a great opportunity to score.

However, it wasn't to be the 30-year-old's day, with his goal-scoring touch completely deserting him, first firing well wide of the post, and the second failing to lift his effort over the onrushing Nick Pope in the Burnley net.

As per Sofascore, his 6.0 match rating was the worst of any player on the pitch, and when you look at his underlying numbers, it is easy to see why.

As well as missing those two big chances, he successfully completed just one out of four dribbles, had just 18 accurate passes, and won a measly one out of eight contested duels - the latter stat a particularly disappointing one considering the Gunners needed their captain and talisman to show the fighting spirit in a tough away game.

The north London side needed their star player to overcome the physicality of the Burnley side, and win his 50/50s - not to mention taking his chances too.

Arteta will simply hope that Aubameyang's wayward performance at the weekend was just a one-off, and that he can get back to his goal-scoring ways.

Meanwhile, Arsenal set to explore transfers for this first-team position in the summer.
