Arsenal have been handed encouragement in the race for Sporting CP full-back Cedric, with the player’s agent having opened the door for a January move.
The 23-year-old defender has been one of Portuguese football’s top emerging stars in recent seasons and is considered to be a key member of the Lisbon giants’ first-team.
His performances have caught the eye of Arsene Wenger of late, with the Frenchman rumoured to be ready to delve into the transfer market in the New Year after seeing the lack of depth at the back in his squad exposed by a series of injuries.
Cedric – a two-time Portugal international – has a release clause of £25.5m, and reports have suggested that the Gunners chief is open to meeting the figure.
And now his agent, Miguel Veloso, has pushed the door open further by revealing that a move when the transfer window kicks back in is a possibility:
“We are happy his work is being recognised,” he told Portuguese outlet Record.
“Right now, we continue to negotiate the renewal of the contract between Cedric and Sporting. But nothing is agreed.
“All scenarios are possible [in January].”
