Arsenal boosted in race for Man City star

Arsenal have been given the green light to move for Matija Nastasic after Manchester City chief Manuel Pellegrini revealed that he is ready to offload the defender.

With the arrival of Eliaquim Mangala from Porto last week in a £32m deal, the Serbian centre-back has fallen even further down the Sky Blues’ pecking order, with Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis also favourites of their Chilean boss.

Arsenal have been watching the 21-year-old for much of his career, and with Thomas Vermaelen having been sold Arsene Wenger is known to be desperate to snap up a new enforcer – with newbie Callum Chambers having been used at the heart of the backline despite his youthful age and preference to play as a full-back.

As well as the Gunners, Juventus are also keen on Nastasic and Pellegrini has opened the door for interested parties ahead of the transfer deadline:

“Matija needs to play. We already have important players here, with Demichelis, Kompany, Mangala and Boyata,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“So we will see in the next few days what happens with Nastasic. He is an important player but he has offers and I think the best thing for him is to play.

“We have until the end of August to see what kind of offers we get.”

Nastasic is valued at around £12m by City.
