Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that Mesut Ozil will prove to be a “fantastic” addition to the Gunners’ squad.
The Londoners completed a shock club record £42.5million deadline day swoop to bring the German international to the club from Real Madrid, ending a frustrating summer of transfer activity on a positive note.
The 24-year-old – who has penned a five-year contract worth £140,000-per-week – has been a long-term target for Wenger, who revealed that he is thrilled to have brought the playmaker to the Emirates Stadium.
“Mesut is a top quality footballer who will be a fantastic addition to our talented squad,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“We are all looking forward to him joining up with us after his international matches with Germany and working with us as an Arsenal player.
“He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level.
“We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.”
Prior to Ozil’s move Wenger had come in for some criticism from Arsenal fans for a perceived lack of effort in the transfer market.
The Gunners missed out on a number of big name players, including Luis Suarez, Luiz Gustavo and Gonzalo Higuain.
Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano also arrived in North London on deadline day, completing a season-long loan deal from Serie A side Palermo.
The 27-year-old is expected to support number one stopper Wojciech Szczesny.
