With just a few days to go until the door allowing movement between clubs slams shut, Wenger has still only managed to bring in one player – Yaya Sanogo. An opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa gave much food for thought over how much strengthening the Gunners needed to be competitive in all competitions. Let’s remember it has now been nine seasons since Wenger guided them to a trophy and patience is running out.
Since then, Arsenal have recorded three solid wins, twice over Fenerbahce and over Fulham away from home in the Premier League at the weekend. This has bought Wenger a little bit of respite over questions surrounding the squad and you would think it would leave him more prepared for an answer should he be asked about potential additions again.
Yet, when asked by ITV’s Gabriel Clarke last night about transfers Wenger admitted: “I don’t know what to say anymore”. Not the words of someone who is prepared to bring in star names! One has to wonder what the odds are for Arsenal to not have anyone new by the 2nd September.
