Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has played down speculation of an imminent move for Karim Benzema by insisting that links with the Real Madrid man are “just media talk”.
The Gunners have been heavily aligned with the France international of late, with reports having claimed that a £45m fee will be enough for him and that the Londoners have been negotiating with the player.
Such suggestions have been given credibility by Arsenal’s lack of centre-forward options, with Olivier Giroud, arguably, Wenger’s only genuine option in the role.
However, the iconic Emirates Stadium chief has cooled talk of a move for Benzema, and insisted that when Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez are match-fit he’ll have an adequate strikeforce:
“You think for me about that because I never came out on Karim Benzema. It is just media talk,” he is quoted by talkSPORT.
“At the moment we have no [Alexis] Sanchez, no [Danny] Welbeck. When these players come back we feel we have the needed striking force.”
Arsenal’s current record signing is Mesut Ozil, who cost the club £42.5m in 2013.
Although Wenger has a reputation for a reluctance to spend, the aforementioned German and Sanchez have both been signed in the last two summers for significant fees.
