Arsenal boss sets sights on beating Man United to signature of Colombian ace

Speculation has increased that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will make a summer move for Porto striker Jackson Martinez after the Frenchman sang the Colombian’s praises in an interview with beIN Sports.

The Portuguese giants are well-known for selling their stars to Europe’s biggest clubs for huge transfer fees in recent times with Ricardo Carvalho, Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez to name just three examples of the club cashing in on their most prized assets.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger said: “[He has] top physical strengths. Hugely efficient, he is the kind of player who can make room for himself in the box.

“He could play in the Premier League because he has the body to make the difference. He uses it in a very intelligent way. Very short back lift and he’s a very good finisher.”

Earlier in the week, Martinez – who is also reportedly a Manchester United target – revealed his intention to leave Porto in the summer. The 28-year-old has scored 85 goals in just two-and-a-half seasons at the Estadio do Dragao, having joined from Mexican side Chiapas in 2012.

Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League with 45 points, one behind fourth place Southampton. The Gunners host Middlesbrough in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, and are holders of the trophy having beaten Hull City in last season’s final.
