Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to push through January deals for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and Saint Etienne captain Loic Perrin to boost his defensive options, according to reports from The Express.
The Frenchman is desperate to boost his options in the back third of the pitch, with a series of early season injuries having decimated his squad and exposed failings in the summer transfer window.
It’s understood that Wenger has told Arsenal chiefs that he needs funds, with Carvalho and Perrin the two players he wants to splash the cash for.
The former is seen as the top target, with a genuine physical presence in defensive midfield a priority.
Carvalho, 22, is one of European football’s most highly-rated young enforcers, and is a player that has been on Wenger’s radar for some time.
Reports have indicated that Sporting may find it hard to rebuff offers in the region of £20m – £25m for their man.
Experienced defender Perrin of Saint Etienne is also on the agenda.
Wenger wants to add another centre-back as cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, with injuries to the pair having already forced him to use full-backs Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal in the role.
The 29-year-old, who is valued at £6m, has already revealed that contact has been made with his representatives from Arsenal.
