Arsenal boss wanted late summer deal for surprise Prem sensation

Arsenal were unsuccessful with a late effort to sign Leicester City’s impressive winger Riyad Mahrez, according to reports from El Mundo Deportivo.

The Gunners’ summer transfer business has been widely ridiculed since the close of the window on Tuesday, with the Londoners the only side in any of Europe’s top five leagues to have failed to bring in a single outfield player – former Chelsea goalie Petr Cech was the only major addition at the Emirates Stadium.

However, it appears that the club were attempting to rescue the situation with a late deal for Mahrez, who was player Arsene Wenger ordered the club to pursue.

The Algeria international has been one of the Premier League’s best players over the course of the opening four games, with his four goals having left Leicester in the Champions League qualification zone heading into the international break.

Reports claim that he’s one of a number of players to have alerted La Liga side Barcelona, which could be an issue for the Arsenal when the January transfer window opens should they opt to go back in for the 24-year-old.
