According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are keen to tie down Bukayo Saka to a new deal amid interest from other clubs.
The 18-year-old has been nothing short of a revelation this season for the Gunners, scoring three goals and six assists across all competitions.
The Daily Mail claim that amid the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich “monitoring developments”, the Gunners have begun negotiations on a new contract that would see him commit his long-term future to the club.
Saka reportedly earns £3k-a-week on his existing deal with the Gunners, although that contract is set to expire in 18 months.
Whilst a lot of eyes will be on what Arsenal do in terms of new signings, there will still be plenty of attention in terms of potential outgoings and contract talks.
The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil both have their contracts expire in the summer of 2021, and in regards to the former, potentially losing the Gabon international for a minimal fee would be gut-wrenching. The striker was a joint-winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner last season, so Raul Sanllehi will surely be keen on extending his contract.
But in all honesty, the Spaniard’s focus should be on Saka. Aubameyang is set to turn 31 in June, and doesn’t necessarily represent the long-term future of the club. On the other hand, the Gunners’ academy product is everything that Mikel Arteta should look to build his side around. Home-grown, young, and deservedly keeping his place in the team due to his performances.
The north London side have been blessed with a number of academy starlets coming through at the same time: the likes of Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe, to name but a few. Getting Saka to sign a new deal will send out the right message to the rest of the youngsters and to the fans too – that the Gunners are heading for a bright future with players who know what it means to play for the club.
