Arsenal can’t afford to lose Ozil to Manchester United

According to The Express, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is planning a shock move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in January.

What’s the story?

Mesut Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 for a fee in the region of £42.5 million. Last January he signed a new contract with the Gunners which made him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

If United were to prise Ozil away from the Emirates Stadium it would certainly cost them an awful lot of money to do so. However, the North London club cannot allow yet another of their star names to depart for Old Trafford.

Less than one year ago, Alexis Sanchez made exactly that move and the Gunners can’t let the trend of seeing their best players join one of their greatest rivals continue. Even if the German does want out of the club, new boss Unai Emery must ensure that he doesn’t leave to join Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

A key figure for a new era

Beyond strengthening a rival, Arsenal would also be greatly weakened by the loss of Ozil. Whilst his form has been patchy of late, the 29-year-old retains the capacity to be one of the finest attacking-midfielders in the world. His brilliant record of 38 goals and 66 assists in 200 appearances for the Gunners exemplifies this.

If Emery can get the best out of Ozil then the No. 10 could become the talismanic figure around which this new era in Arsenal’s history is built. That certainly won’t be achieved if the Gunners cave in to United’s demands.
