Arsenal chase £8m-rated defender

Bruno Martins Indi

Arsenal are showing an interest in signing Feyenoord defender Bruno Martins Indi in January, according to the Daily Mail.

However Everton remain keen on signing the player they showed a strong interest in during the summer, meaning the two clubs could be set for a January bidding war.

Arsene Wenger has made signing a new centre back a priority in January, with Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen the only senior options available.

The 21-year-old Dutch international is on the club’s scouting list, and appeals to Wenger due to his versatility.

And Arsenal will hope they can pip Everton to the signing of the £8million rated defender, as one of their former players is on the Feyenoord coaching staff.

Wenger may look to utilise his relationship with former Gunners star Giovanni van Bronckhorst in order to complete the signing, and the former Dutch international rates the young defender very highly.

“He is very good and strong. It is not for nothing he’s a first-choice here and with the Dutch national team. He will make the move to a foreign club in the long term,” van Bronckhorst said.

“When the time comes and he wants to leave, he will leave the club. We are very happy with him, but we know we cannot compete with the top European clubs.”
