Arsenal chase Italian star

AC Milan's Ignazio Abate

Arsenal are interested in signing AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate, reports talkSPORT.

The Italian has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro, and is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League.

Abate is a product of the Milan academy, and the Serie A giants are keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old. The club will offer Abate a new contract, to secure his services past next season.

Milan finished 15 points adrift of Serie A champions Juventus last season, and Abate is interested in moving to England instead of challenging the Old Lady for the title once more.

Arsene Wenger is considering a bid for the full-back, who could replace Bacary Sagna. The Frenchman struggled last season, with consistency a huge issue for the defender.

Abate started 25 league games for Milan last season, as well as two matches for Italy in the Confederations Cup. But the defender came off after just 30 minutes in Italy’s 4-2 defeat to Brazil due to a shoulder injury.

Arsenal could sign Abate as part of their summer revamp, with Wenger being handed a £70million transfer kitty, to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. The Italian could join Gonzalo Higuain, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.

Would Abate do well at Arsenal? Should he join the Gunners?
