Arsenal close in on Brazilian stopper

Julio Cesar

Arsenal are in pole position to sign QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar, according to the Daily Star.

The Brazilian has found himself linked with a move to the Emirates for the majority of the summer, and now the transfer seems to be finally about to take place.

The deal did appear to be dead at one stage, with the 33-year-old expected to complete a move to Serie A giants Napoli.

However, now Rafael Benitez looks to be on the verge of completing a deal to bring Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to the club on a season-long-loan, after the Spaniard underwent a medical at the club.

That has paved the way for Arsenal to renew their interest in the Brazilian shot stopper, who could be available for as little as £1.5million.

Cesar’s agent Josias Cardoso says he’s still confident his client could be heading back to the Premier League this season.

“In Italy recently I have only spoken to Napoli,” Cardoso said.

“President Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted him, but didn’t want to pay Julio’s current wages.

“He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and after a great Confederations Cup performance he showed his desire to come back to Italy by demanding nothing more.

“It would’ve been normal for someone in his position to ask for a pay rise, but he didn’t. Is there still hope of seeing him in Italy? If I don’t have official contact with a club, then I cannot have hope.

“I recently have not had contact with Milan or Roma. Arsenal remain a concrete option.”

Cesar proved the stand-out performer for QPR last season, with his manager Harry Redknapp revealing the keeper would only be allowed to leave the club on a permanent deal this summer.
