Arsenal close in on German starlet

Freiburg youngster Matthias Ginter

Arsenal are closing in on their second signing of the summer by agreeing a move for Freiburg teenager Matthias Ginter, according to The Metro.

Arsenal supporters have been left frustrated this transfer window by the club’s failure to spend big money. So far the club have been linked with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Marouane Fellaini, however only 18-year-old French forward Yaya Sanogo has been added to the ranks.

Ginter is another young player who is hardly expected to walk straight into the first team next season, although manager Arsene Wenger is confident the signing of the 19-year-old German will prove a shrewd piece of business.

The two clubs are understood to have agreed a fee of roughly £6million, with the player now expected to fly to London to complete a medical and agree personal terms.

Arsenal have made signing young German talent something of their forte in recent seasons, with young midfielders Serge Gnabry and Thomas Eisfeld both impressing for the club’s youth teams, and thought to be on the brink of the first team squad this season.

Ginter is comfortable in either defence or midfield, and made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, some of which even came as an emergency striker.
