Arsene Wenger has made signing a defensive midfielder one of his priorities for the coming transfer window and the Switzerland international appears to be his preferred target, having tracked him for over twelve months.
The Gladbach captain has been in good form this season, averaging 2.5 tackles and 2.8 interceptions per match, but has also picked up three red cards from 24 Bundesliga appearances.
A source close to the player has informed ESPN that Arsenal are confident they’ll agree a deal for the 23-year-old this summer.
However, there is still a dispute over Xhaka’s price-tag. The north London outfit are prepared to pay £30million, but Gladbach are hoping to squeeze another £4million out of them.
The 40-cap international has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League, recently telling Sport1;”Everybody has a childhood dream, and for me it is England.”
