The Gunners suffered a major blow when Laurent Koscielny limped out of training during their pre-season tour of Asia in Japan, with the Frenchman thought to have suffered an ankle injury.
The news will come as a massive blow to Arsene Wenger, as Koscielny proved one of the key men behind their late turnaround in form last season, and was heading into the new Premier League campaign as the club’s first choice centre back.
The extent of the injury remains unclear, but anything serious would leave the Gunners horribly short of defensive options.
The club have recently released Sebastian Squillaci, while allowing Johan Djourou to join Hamburg on a season-long-loan. Club captain Thomas Vermaelen is expected to miss another three months with a back injury, meaning Per Mertesacker is currently the only fit and available senior centre back at the club.
That may lead to Wenger reviving his interest in Swansea captain Williams, with the Welsh international reportedly valued at around £10million.
Williams showed excellent form for Swansea last season, proving a key member of the side that tasted Capital One Cup success under Michael Laudrup.
Wenger’s reported interest appeared to have cooled, but the injury to Koscielny may see the Gunners boss step in with a firm offer.
