Arsenal could miss out on signing Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly as Chelsea have emerged frontrunners for his signature, according to Corriere dello Sport.

What's the story?

Calciomercato cites Corriere dello Sport as saying that the West London outfit are leading the charge for the 26-year-old, who has been a Napoli player since his 2014 switch from Genk.

The report states that the Serie A outfit are unlikely to let Koulibaly leave easily, particularly as his contract does not expire until 2022.

Arsenal are also believed to be in the hunt, and have been linked with the defender for some time.

Should the Gunners keep pursuing?

One thing is for sure, Arsenal need to strengthen their back line this summer, as they have struggled for consistency.

Koulibaly ticks plenty of boxes as he provides a big physical presence at the back, but also possesses accurate passing.

In addition, the Senegal international has contributed with four goals and an assist in 39 appearances for Napoli, which proves that he can be an asset in set pieces at both ends of the field.

It appears, though, that Arsenal have a fight on their hands if Koulibaly is leaning towards Chelsea.

The transfer could come down to ambition and silverware.
